Abstract
The chapter consolidates the SòngYuánMíng smallpox / dòuzhěn specialist literature and is the first official Qīng imperial work to incorporate a section on réndòu 人痘 (variolation) inoculation — a major medical-policy decision of Qián-lóng-era. The chapter is the principal channel through which 18th- and 19th-century Qīng practitioners learned variolation technique and was instrumental in the practice’s spread throughout the Qīng empire.
