Opening the Lock of the Golden Cabinet — Ophthalmology by 黃朝坊 (撰)

About the work

The Yǎnkē 眼科 (Ophthalmology) section of 黃朝坊 Huáng Cháofāng’s Jīnguì qǐyuè 金匱啟鑰 (“Opening the Lock of the Golden Cabinet”) — the companion volume to the women’s-medicine section (KR3eu039) — is the late-Qīng ophthalmology volume of Huáng’s classical-formula-school (jīngfāngpài 經方派) compendium. The work belongs to the conservative literate-physician ophthalmological tradition initiated by 倪維德 Ní Wéidé’s Yuánjī qǐwēi (KR3eu005) and codified by the imperial Yīzōng jīnjiàn · Yǎnkē xīnfǎ yàojué (KR3eu023), against the more popular wǔlún bākuò 五輪八廓 craft-practitioner schema.

Abstract

Composition window late 19th century; a more precise dating is not available without the work’s preface. The volume covers the standard premodern Chinese disease-categories of ophthalmology — corneal opacities, glaucoma / qīngmáng 青盲, the inflammatory presentations, dry-eye, lacrimation, and jīnzhēn bōzhàng 金針撥障 (cataract couching) — with the warming-tonifying treatment orientation that characterises Huáng’s compendium as a whole. The work has not received substantial Western-language scholarship.
