Dù Yù jí 杜預集

Collected Works of Du Yu (Reconstructed) by 杜預 (撰)

About the work

A reconstructed collection (jíyìběn 輯佚本) of writings attributed to Dù Yù 杜預 (222–284 CE), the Western Jìn 西晉 general, hydraulic engineer, and commentator on the Zuǒzhuàn 左傳. The surviving fragments in a single juǎn include memorials and petitions such as 〈舉賢良方正表〉 (Memorial Recommending Worthy and Upright Men) and 〈表〉 citing administrative projects — notably irrigation and canal construction east of Luòyáng 洛陽 (the “chìmǎ zhōu” waterway 赤馬舟). The collection also contains fragments cited from the Chūxué jì 初學記 and Wénxuǎn 文選 annotations. A note in the collection cautions that Zhāng Pǔ 張溥 mistakenly incorporated one item from Lù Yún 陸雲’s 〈薦張瞻文〉 into the Dù Yù jí in his Bǎisān jiā jí edition; the present reconstruction excludes it.

Abstract

Dù Yù 杜預 (222–284; Yuánkǎi 元凱; CBDB id 21190; enfeoffed Marquis of Dāngyáng 當陽侯) was one of the most versatile officials of the Western Jìn, combining military command, administrative reform, and classical scholarship at a high level. His most famous contribution is the Chūnqiū Zuǒzhuàn jí jiě 春秋左傳集解 (KR1e0108), the standard commentary on the Zuǒzhuàn that remained authoritative throughout the imperial period; he also authored the Chūnqiū shì lì 春秋釋例, an analytical supplement. As general he commanded the conquest of Wú 吳 in 280, completing the unification of the empire under Jìn. His administrative memorials on river control and irrigation in the Jìng-Huái 荊淮 region are classics of hydraulic management.

The literary fragments in the present reconstruction are relatively few in number and predominantly official in register. The Suíshū Jīngjízhì records a Dù Yù jí 杜預集 in seventeen juǎn, already abbreviated from an earlier thirty-juǎn version; none survives. Zhāng Pǔ 張溥’s reconstruction in the Hàn Wèi Liùcháo bǎisān jiā jí 漢魏六朝百三家集 erroneously included a text from Lù Yún 陸雲, corrected in the present edition. See also 杜預.
