Liǔ Hédōng jí 柳河東集
Collected Works of Liǔ of Hé-dōng (Liǔ Zōng-yuán) by 柳宗元 (撰), 韓醇 (詁訓)
About the work
Gǔxùn Liǔ xiānshēng wénjí 詁訓柳先生文集 in 45 juǎn (with appended Wàijí 外集 in 2 juǎn and Xīnbiān wàijí 新編外集 in 1 juǎn) — generally known as Liǔ Hédōng jí 柳河東集 — is the foundational Sòng annotated edition of Liǔ Zōngyuán 柳宗元’s collected works, with running commentary (gǔxùn 詁訓 — glosses and explanations) by Hán Chún 韓醇 (zì Zhòngshào 仲韶, Línqióng 臨邛 / Sìchuān man, fl. ca. 1170–1180; not the same person as Hán Yù’s son-in-law Hán Yù 韓郁). The 45-juǎn form descends from Liǔ Yǔxī’s KR4c0051 author Liú Yǔxī 劉禹錫’s original Tang-period editorial close (820s) — Liú Yǔxī, Liǔ Zōngyuán’s lifelong friend, edited the collection at his death in 819 and supplied the substantial preface preserved here. Of the four Sòng circulating recensions identified by the Sìkù tíyào (a 33-juǎn Yuánfú period print, the Zēng prime-minister family copy, the Yàn Yuánxiàn family copy, and the present 45-juǎn — derived from the Mù Xiū 穆脩 family copy and identified in the Sòng tradition as Liú Yǔxī’s original 45-juǎn), the present version is the most authoritative.
Tiyao
Gǔxùn Liǔ xiānshēng wénjí in 45 juǎn, with Wàijí in 2 juǎn and Xīnbiān wàijí in 1 juǎn — composed by Liǔ Zōngyuán of the Táng, with yīnshì (phonetic and meaning notes) by Hán Chún of the Sòng. Chún’s zì was Zhòngshào, a Línqióng man; his beginning and end are unknown. Zōngyuán’s collection was edited by Liú Yǔxī. Subsequent juǎnmù additions and deletions by the Sòng produced four parallel recensions: (1) 33 juǎn, Yuánfú period (1098–1100) capital print; (2) the Zēng [Gǒng?] family copy; (3) the Yàn Yuánxiàn 晏元獻 (= Yàn Shū 晏殊) family copy; (4) the present 45-juǎn version, said to come from the Mù Xiū 穆脩 family and to be Liú Yǔxī’s original recension.
Per Chén Zhènsūn’s Shūlù jiětí: Liú Yǔxī’s preface says he edited the prose into 32 tōng (sections), with the [Hán Yù] zhì and jìwén appended at the end of the first tōng; current circulating texts are all 45 juǎn and do not include Hán Yù’s zhìwén — therefore not the original. Examining the present text: Liú Yǔxī’s preface here gives 45 tōng not 32 — disagreeing with Chén’s account; either later editors revised the preface to match the 45-juǎn circulating version, or the figure is not certain. Abstract
The 45-juǎn form is the principal Sòng recension of the Liǔ Zōngyuán corpus. Hán Chún’s commentary represents the earlier of the two surviving major Sòng commentary traditions (the other being the Liǔ Hédōng jí zhù by Tóng Zōngshuō 童宗說, Zhāng Dūnyí 張敦頤, and Pān Wěi 潘緯 = KR4c0049, and behind both, the Wǔbǎijiā zhù anthology of Wèi Zhòngjǔ = KR4c0050). Hán Chún’s notes are principally philological — yīnshì phonetic glosses and source-tracing for allusions — without the philosophical interpretation found in the later Sòng jízhù tradition.

Other points of interest
Hán Chún was also responsible for an annotated edition of Hán Yù’s collection (a Hán Chánglí jí jiàozhèng mentioned in Sòng catalogs but not surviving in WYG); his pairing of the HánLiǔ commentary work places him in the broader Sòng fùgǔ commemorative scholarship of the Lóngxìng / Qiándào generation.
