QiáoWú jí 僑吳集

The Sojourning-in-Wú Collection by 鄭元祐 (撰), re-edited by 張習 (重編)

About the work

A 12-juǎn (6 juǎn wén + 6 juǎn shī) re-edited collection of Zhèng Yuányòu 鄭元祐 (1292–1364). Title from Zhèng’s 40-year liúyù (in transit-residence) at Píngjiāng (Wú = Sūzhōu) after relocation from Qiántáng. Suìchāng shānrén by biéhào. Original YuánMíng recension consisted of Suìchāng shānrén jí + QiáoWú jí with much overlap; the Hóngzhì bǐngchén (1496) Zhāng Xí 張習 zhòngdìng combined and selected the “精純者” 12-juǎn recension as the present text. The collection’s principal anomaly — the Zhāng Décháng shū claiming a jùn post — is corrected by Sū Dànián’s mùzhì and Lú Xióng’s Sūzhōu fǔzhì, both attesting Zhèng held only xiàoguān (school-officer) posts.

Tiyao

QiáoWú jí, 12 juǎn. By Zhèng Yuányòu of the Yuán. Yuányòu has Suìchāng zálù already in the catalog. Yuányòu’s family-seat Suìchāng — relocated to Qiántáng — and liúyù at Píngjiāng 40 years — the longest period — so the ’s name QiáoWú (Sojourning in Wú). Actually compositions at Hángzhōu are also in it; takes from the bulk. The original was Yuányòu’s late-years’ zìdìng — given to Xiè Huī 謝徽. The present version’s back has Hóngzhì bǐngchén (1496) Zhāng Xí : “Yuányòu had original Suìchāng shānrén jí, with QiáoWú jí — much fánwú chóngchū (cluttered and repeated) — so I read both and obtained the shīwén jīngchún zhě — combined as 12 juǎn — still named QiáoWú jí — for woodblock printing.” So this version is Xí chóngdìng — not Yuányòu’s hand-edited version. Wén 6 juǎn; shī 6 juǎn. Among them Zhāng Décháng shū — has “pú zàn jùn wúbǔ — cháng yí Léilǐ zhī yǔ” — but Sū Dànián’s mùzhì and Lú Xióng’s Sūzhōu fǔzhì all say Yuányòu was by dàfǔ (provincial) recommended; twice jiàoguān — does not say also held other posts — does not match Yuányòu’s shìlǚ (career). Could it be a composition for someone else, slipping the marking? — His prose pō shūdàng yǒu qì (rather free and powerful); verse also cānggǔ. Since Yuányòu was born Zhìyuán mò (end of Zhìyuán) — still saw the Xiánchún (Sòng-late) yílǎo; in the middle also saw Yú Jí et al. — got their xùlùn. End-years exchanged with — also all Gù Āyīng, Ní Zàn, Zhāng Yǔ et al. — hù xiāng xūnrǎn — his qìyùn not the same — also has zìlái (its source). Respectfully collated.

Abstract

QiáoWú jí preserves the principal monument of a SuìchāngQiántángSūzhōu literatus whose life spans the Xiánchún yílǎo (Sòng-late old men he met) → Yú Jí mid-Yuán → Gù Āyīng / Ní Zàn / Zhāng Yǔ late-Yuán arc — an unusually broad intellectual reach. Zhèng’s role is principally as a Sūzhōu literary node — his Yuán circle includes the principal late-Yuán Wúzhōng figures. The Hóng-zhì-era Zhāng Xí re-editing (1496) is a typical Míng pruning of an Yuán biéjí. The catalog meta gives an editor function 重編 for Zhāng Xí — zhòngbiān exactly fits the 1496 zhòngdìng. Composition window: 1320 (mature work begins) to 1364 (death).
