Nánběicháo Záji 南北朝雜記

Miscellaneous Notes on the Southern and Northern Dynasties by 劉敞

About the work

A brief záji 雜記 (miscellaneous notes) on the Southern and Northern Dynasties period (420–589 CE), compiled by 劉敞 Liú Chǎng (1019–1068; CBDB id 3580), one of the foremost Northern Song classical scholars. The work consists of a series of short critical and antiquarian observations on historical figures and events of the Nánběicháo period, written in the scholar’s-notebook mode characteristic of Song historical bǐjì. Its primary value lies in Liu Chang’s erudite commentary on sources for the period rather than in independent historical data.

Abstract

劉敞 Liú Chǎng (1019–1068; CBDB id 3580) was an eminent Northern Song official and classicist, elder brother of 劉攽 Liú Bān (1023–1089). He held prestigious posts including Hanlin academician and participated in the reform controversies of his era, broadly aligned with the moderate reformers around Ouyang Xiu. His principal scholarly output was in Chūnqiū 春秋 studies and classical philology; the Gōngshì jí 公是集 preserves his collected writings.

The Nánběicháo Záji is a minor work characteristic of the Song habit of critical historical note-taking. The source file opens with an entry on Yǔ Shēn 庾詵 (a Qi-dynasty figure), showing the text’s anecdotal format. Like many Song bǐjì, it combines historical curiosities with textual criticism and is more a record of an erudite reader’s observations than a systematic historical work.
