Liú Chǎng 劉敞 (1019–1068), Yuánfù 原父, hào Gōngshì 公是 (in his collected works often Gōngshì xiānsheng), was a leading Northern Sòng classicist and Chūnqiū specialist. Native of Xīnyú 新喻 (Jiāngxī). Jìnshì of Qìnglì 6 (1046, bǎngyǎn — second place); brother of the slightly junior Liú Bān 劉攽 (1023–1089). Held a sequence of central and provincial posts, including envoy to the Liáo (1063) and Director of the Imperial Library. Major works: the Chūnqiū chuán 春秋傳 (the foundation of his Chūnqiū studies, in the SKQS); the Gōngshì jí 公是集 (collected works); the Gōngshì dìzǐ jì 公是弟子記 (KR3a0034, despite the title — see SKQS tíyào — actually his own dialogues in yǔlù style). Biography: Sòng shǐ j. 319. Liú is one of the more politically and intellectually independent Northern-Sòng classicists of the Qìnglì–Xīníng generation, noted by Cháo Gōngwǔ for praising both Wáng Ānshí faction and Yuányòu-faction figures by personal name in his works (suggesting careful editorial differentiation rather than partisan affiliation).
