Abstract

This larger anonymous collection may represent fragments that circulated unattached to any specific author in the reference works that preserved them, or it may be the remnant of a named collection whose attribution was lost. The tales span the full range of filial piety tropes: miraculous responses to sincere devotion, extreme bodily sacrifice, recognition by the state, and the supernatural rewards that accrued to the filially virtuous. The fragments were recovered principally from the Tàipíng Yùlǎn 太平御覽 and the Yìwén Lèijù 藝文類聚.
