Biographies of Elders of Xiangyang by 習鑿齒

About the work

Xiāngyáng Qíjiù Zhuàn 襄陽耆舊傳 (also known as Xiāngyáng Qíjiù Jì 襄陽耆舊記) is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a local biographical collection recording notable elders (qíjiù 耆舊) of Xiāngyáng 襄陽 by 習鑿齒, the Eastern Jin historian and native of the city. At over 700 lines, it is one of the more substantial of the regional qíjiù zhuàn reconstructions.

Abstract

Xí Zuòchǐ (fl. mid-4th c. CE), the author of the Hàn Jìn Chūnqiū 漢晉春秋 (KR4k0346), was Xiāngyáng’s most famous son and its principal historian. His Xiāngyáng Qíjiù Zhuàn (recorded in the Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography in 5 juǎn) was a local history of his hometown’s notable figures. The fragments include biographical notices on officials, scholars, and recluses from the Hàn through the Eastern Jin periods who were associated with Xiāngyáng — which, as a strategic city on the middle Hàn River, produced a disproportionate number of notable figures in the Three Kingdoms and Jin periods. The work complements the anonymous Xiāngyáng Jì 襄陽記 (KR4k0393) and provides an insider’s view of the region by its most important historian.
