Commentary on the “Huángdì yīnfú jīng”

Táng commentary by the celebrated Daoist Zhāng Guǒ 張果 (first half of the eighth century, d. beginning of the Tiānbǎo era, 742–756), eleven folios, preserved in the Zhèngtǒng Dàozàng 正統道藏 (DZ 0113 / CT 113 = TC 112), 洞真部 本文類

About the work

An eleven-folio Táng commentary on the [[KR5a0031|Huángdì yīnfú jīng]] by the celebrated Daoist Zhāng Guǒ 張果, recorded in [[KR5a0295|DZ 295 Xù xiān zhuàn]] 2.4b–6a as having died at the beginning of the Tiānbǎo period (742–756). Since the commentary mentions neither the title nor hào that were bestowed on Zhāng by the emperor in 734 (cf. Jiù Táng shū 8.200), it was probably written before that date. Zhāng Guǒ’s biography in Jiù Táng shū 191 records that he wrote the Yīnfú jīng xuánjiě 陰符經玄解; in the Sòng catalogues, the present text is listed under the title Yīnfú jīng tàiwú zhuàn 陰符經太無傳 (see VDL 140).

Zhāng mentions in his preface that several commentaries to the Yīnfú jīng existed already; he wrote his specifically to refute Lǐ Quán 李筌’s [[KR5a0109|DZ 109 Jízhù]] — making this commentary an early example within the Daozang of direct commentarial polemic between contemporary Táng Daoist authorities.

Prefaces

Preface by Zhāng Guǒ surveying existing Yīnfú jīng commentaries and announcing his refutation of Lǐ Quán.

Abstract

Florian C. Reiter, in Schipper & Verellen eds., The Taoist Canon (2004) 2:693 (§3.A.1), dates the commentary to before 734 (since it does not mention Zhāng’s 734 imperial title). The frontmatter brackets composition notBefore 700 / notAfter 734, with dynasty 唐. Zhāng Guǒ is the sole catalog-meta person wikilinked.
