A philological apparatus (1 + 21 folios) to Péng Sì’s [[KR5c0095|DZ 707 Dàodé zhēn jīng jí zhù]], preserved in the Zhèngtǒng Dàozàng as DZ 708 / CT 708 (Dòngshén bù, Yù jué lèi 洞神部玉訣類), and in the Qīng Dàozàng jíyào as JY050. This is one of three complementary works by Péng Sì on the Dàodé jīng — together with DZ 707 Jí zhù (KR5c0095) and DZ 709 Jí zhù zá shuō — all dating to 1229.

About the work

Isabelle Robinet’s notice in Schipper & Verellen eds., The Taoist Canon (2004, 2:1166, DZ 708) gives the authoritative modern framing. Péng Sì compares textual variations and glosses in the Dàodé jīng text, drawing on:

• Lù Démíng’s 陸德明 (c. 550–630) Jīng diǎn shì wén 經典釋文 — the classical Táng philological reference.
• Chén Jǐngyuán’s 陳景元 (1025–1094) DZ 714 Dàodé zhēn jīng cáng shì zuǎn wēi piān.
• Data taken from DZ 707 Jí zhù (KR5c0095) — internal cross-reference with the main anthology.

The shì wén provides more substantial philological treatment than Liáng Jiǒng’s earlier shì yīn (KR5c0094, 1098), which was primarily a pronunciation aid. Péng Sì’s DZ 708 is a full critical-edition apparatus, integrating variant readings, etymological notes, and parallel citations.

Abstract

The shì wén is an indispensable complement to Péng Sì’s main anthology. Where the DZ 707 Jí zhù collects and cites the commentators, the DZ 708 Shì wén addresses the underlying textual-philological issues that the commentators themselves often presuppose. Together they form one of the most comprehensive single pre-Míng critical-scholarly treatments of the Dàodé jīng.
