The Sòng printed edition of the [[KR5c0050|Dòng líng zhēn jīng]] (the Kàngcāng zǐ) with Hé Càn’s commentary, preserved in the Sìbù cóngkān 四部叢刊 (SBCK, volume 33, number 439) and with a modern critical apparatus by the Republican-era scholar Zhāng Yuánjì 張元濟 (1867–1959).

This is a parallel edition of the text and commentary also preserved in KR5c0141 (the DZ 747 text). Key differences:

Author/commentator naming

  • Wáng Shì yuán 王士元 — this is a variant writing of Wáng Shì yuán 王士源 (the compiler of the 742 Kàngcāng zǐ; see KR5c0050).
  • Hé Càn 何粲 — variant writing of Hé Càn 何璨 (see KR5c0141). The characters 粲 and 璨 are interchangeable variants meaning “bright, brilliant”.

Zhāng Yuánjì’s critical apparatus

Zhāng Yuánjì 張元濟 (1867–1959) was one of the great modern Chinese philologists and editors — a foundational figure of 20th-century Chinese textual scholarship, chief editor of the Commercial Press 商務印書館 Sìbù cóngkān and Sìbù bèi yào series. His jiào kān jì 校勘記 to this edition provides:

  1. Systematic textual-critical comparisons with other surviving Kàngcāng zǐ editions.
  2. Notes on variants between the Sòng-printed text and the DZ 747 Daozang text.
  3. Modern philological commentary on difficult passages.

Abstract

The Sòng-print edition (KR5c0142) and the Daozang text (KR5c0141) are complementary witnesses to the Hé Càn commentary tradition. The KR5c0142 5-juàn version is textually more complete; the KR5c0141 3-juàn version is in the canonical Daoist Canon. Modern scholarship uses both.

Dating. Per the project convention for multi-stratified texts: Wáng Shìyuán’s 742 composition is the terminus post quem; Hé Càn’s 936–946 commentary is the terminus ante quem for the scholarly-apparatus layer. Frontmatter gives 742–946 as the broad window. Dynasty: 唐-五代.

Zhāng Yuánjì 張元濟 (1867–1959) is one of the most important figures of 20th-century Chinese textual-editorial scholarship. Jìnshì 1892 (the last age of the Qīng civil-service examinations); later co-founder and chief editor of the Shāng wù yìn shū guǎn 商務印書館 (Commercial Press) in Shanghai.
