Tōng xuán zhēn jīng zuǎn yì shì yīn 通玄真經纘義釋音
Phonetic Glosses to the “Continuation of the Meaning of the True Scripture of Communion with the Mystery”
by 杜道堅 (Dù Dàojiān, 1237–1318); companion to KR5c0143
A short phonetic-gloss apparatus (shì yīn 釋音) to 杜道堅 Dù Dàojiān’s Wénzǐ commentary (KR5c0143 Tōng xuán zhēn jīng zuǎn yì, 1310). Per Schipper & Verellen (2004, 2:3106): the phonetic explanations that conclude the work are “clearly by Dù Dàojiān himself”.
About the work
Function
The shì yīn 釋音 is a brief phonetic-gloss apparatus providing:
- Fǎnqiè 反切 pronunciations for difficult characters in the Wénzǐ.
- Homophone glosses (in the zhí yīn 直音 convention) using common characters to indicate rare ones.
- Occasional brief philological notes.
It is a reader-aid of the same genre as KR5c0094 (Liáng Jiǒng’s 1098 Dàodé zhēn jīng jí zhù shì yīn) and KR5c0132 (Jiǎ Shànxiáng’s 1086 Nán huá zhēn jīng zhí yīn) — part of the standard SòngYuán apparatus attached to major Daoist commentaries.
Abstract
The Shì yīn is a minor but useful component of the comprehensive Dù Dàojiān Wénzǐ scholarly apparatus (parent work at KR5c0143).
Dating. Contemporary with the parent work KR5c0143, so 1310. Dynasty: 元.
