A Yuán-era Daoist hagiographic-biographical compilation listing and ranking Daoist immortals, masters, and adepts across the ages, by the Yuán Daoist Zhāng Tiān yǔ 張天雨 (also transcribed Zhāng Yǔ 張雨, 1283–1350). Dated 1335. Preserved in the Zhèngtǒng Dàozàng as DZ 781 / CT 781 (Dòngshén bù, Pǔ lù lèi 洞神部譜錄類).

Author

Zhāng Tiān yǔ / Zhāng Yǔ 張雨 (1283–1350) was a major Yuán Daoist master, poet, and painter — a disciple of the 38th Celestial Master 張嗣成 Zhāng Sìchéng’s circle. He was active as a Daoist patriarch at Máo shān 茅山 and was widely celebrated for his literati-scholar accomplishments.

Structure

The Xuán pǐn lù ranks Daoist figures into categories (pǐn 品) corresponding to levels of realisation:

  1. Highest-rank Perfected (zhēn rén 真人).
  2. Celestial immortals (tiān xiān 天仙).
  3. Earthly immortals (dì xiān 地仙).
  4. Various lesser categories.

For each figure, the Xuán pǐn lù provides brief biographical / hagiographic information and assigns them to one of the ranks.
