About the work

The Tài qīng tradition

The Tài qīng 太清 (“Great Clarity”) tradition is the earliest of the three major Daoist meditation-alchemical currents, associated with Gé Hóng’s 葛洪 (283–343) Bào pǔ zǐ 抱朴子 tradition. It emphasises outer alchemy (wài dān 外丹) and physiological cultivation (yǎng shēng 養生).

The “Central Yellow” in the title designates the body’s central axis — the zhōng gōng 中宮 (central palace) where yīn and yáng balance. Cultivation of the Central Yellow is a central task of early Daoist meditation.
