About the work

Zhǒu hòu genre

The zhǒu hòu genre of Chinese medical literature comprises portable emergency recipe-books carried on one’s person (literally “behind the elbow” in a sleeve-pocket) for rapid reference. The most famous is Gé Hóng’s 葛洪 Zhǒu hòu bèi jí fāng 肘後備急方. The present DZ 847 is a Daoist-medical example of the genre.
