The Shān hǎi jīng 山海經 — the foundational Chinese classic of mythical geography and zoology, recording strange peoples, beasts, plants, minerals, deities, and spirits organized by cardinal directions. Compiled from pre-Qīn oral and ritual sources through the Western Hàn, receiving its canonical 18-juàn shape at the hands of Liú Xiāng 劉向 and Liú Xīn 劉歆; Guō Pú’s Eastern-Jìn commentary is the standard received commentary preserved in the Dào zàng. Preserved as DZ 1031 / CT 1031 (Tài xuán bù 太玄部).
