The major late-Míng anthology of Zhūgě Liàng’s writings, in 23 juàn totalling over 363,600 characters, compiled by his 36th-generation descendant Zhūgě Xī at his official residence at Línyú 臨庾 in 1632. The collection assembles: (i) nián pǔ (chronology), (ii) zhuàn lüè (biographical sketch), (iii) Shào Hàn lián Wú (continuing-Hàn-and-allying-with-Wú materials), (iv) the surviving prose writings, (v) yí wén (lost-and-recovered fragments), (vi) yí shì zhèn tú (battle-array-diagrams), (vii) yí jì (residual-traces), (viii) Jìn-Táng-and-after poetry-and-prose-eulogies and great-officials’ literary-monuments. The compilation methodology is one of the more rigorous of late-Míng anthology-projects: clear pseudepigrapha (the Xīn shū 心書, Jiàng yuàn 將苑, Liángfù yín 梁父吟, Huángniúmiào jì 黃牛廟記) are explicitly excluded.
Prefaces
Preface (Zhūgě Xī), dated 崇禎壬申十一月 = November–December 1632. Narrates the multi-generation steward-care of the manuscript: the prefacer’s grandfather (the Chángshǐgōng Zhūgě Yìngkē 應科) and great-uncle (the Dàxínggōng) had hand-copied the Wǔhóu jí; his grandfather had inscribed at the head: bīng xī yí yì, yù biānhuì chéng shū, wèi néng yě (“after the war-fires the documents were lost; I wished to compile them into a book but was unable”). The prefacer received and stored the manuscript. In Chóngzhēn rénshēn (1632) at his post in Línyú, his younger brother Zhuó 倬 came from Báimén with ten-some trunk-loads of books, including Màoyuàn Yáng Qùshē’s collected Wǔhóu recension; and from the Lóudōng Wáng 婁東王 family’s jiā chāo (family hand-copy) further copies. The prefacer assembled all these and produced the final 23-juàn collection.
Abstract
The principal late-Míng anthology of Zhūgě Liàng’s writings, compiled by his 36th-generation descendant in 1632. The text was incorporated into the Dào zàng jí yào as part of the Three-Teachings synthesis programme: Zhūgě Liàng was, by Daoist tradition, the Hàn-era figure who alone grasped the Yīnfú jīng (cf. KR5i0061) and accordingly was claimed as part of the Daoist transmission lineage. The classification under DZJY’s KR5i thus reflects the Lǚ-zǔ-circle’s claim on Zhūgě Liàng as a Daoist-flavoured zhōngwǔ (loyalty-and-martial) ancestor.
