Shòu xīnsuì jīng 受新歲經

Sūtra of the Receiving of the New Year (the Pavāraṇā-sūtra; parallel to Madhyama-āgama sūtra 121, to Xīnsuì jīng 新歲經 (KR6a0062) / Jiěxià jīng 解夏經 (KR6a0063), to Saṃyukta-āgama sūtra 1212, to T100 sūtra 228, and to Ekottara-āgama 32.5) by 竺法護 (Zhú Fǎhù / Dharmarakṣa, 譯)

About the work

The Shòu xīnsuì jīng is a single-fascicle Western Jìn 西晉 translation of the Pavāraṇā-sūtra — a parallel of T50 (the Shòusuì jīng 受歲經, also by Dharmarakṣa). The two are closely related but distinct: T50 corresponds to Madhyama-āgama sūtra 89, while T61 corresponds to Madhyama-āgama sūtra 121. The two cover related but not identical material on the pavāraṇā (the closing-of-the-rains-retreat) ceremony. The Taishō head-note flags T61 as the parallel of T62, T63, and the Saṃyukta-āgama / Ekottara-āgama parallels.

The text opens at the Mṛgāramātṛ Hall (鹿母園 = Migāra-mātupāsāda) in the East Park (東苑) of Śrāvasti, with the Buddha and the saṅgha gathered for the pavāraṇā.

Prefaces

The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Western-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「西晉月氏國三藏竺法護譯」.

Abstract

T61 was produced during Dharmarakṣa’s Western Jìn career (266–313 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost. T61 belongs to a four-fold cluster (T61, T62, T63, T26[121]) all rendering essentially the same Indic pavāraṇā discourse from different angles.
