About the work
The Xīnsuì jīng is a single-fascicle Eastern Jìn 東晉 translation of the Pavāraṇā-sūtra — a parallel of T61 (Dharmarakṣa) and T63 (Fǎxián), all rendering essentially the same Indic discourse on the closing-of-the-rains-retreat (pavāraṇā) ceremony. The text opens at the Jetavana monastery in Śrāvasti.
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Eastern-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「東晉天竺三藏曇無蘭譯」. Note that the byline here gives 天竺 (“India”) for Tánwúlán’s place of origin, in contrast to the more usual 西域 (“Western Regions”) found in his other bylines (cf. KR6a0022, KR6a0042, KR6a0058) — a small variant that may reflect cataloguer-side rather than translator-side terminology.
Abstract
T62 was produced during Zhú Tánwúlán’s Yangdu translation period (381–395 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost. Together with T61, T63 and T26[121], T62 forms a four-fold cluster of pre-Saṃghadeva-and-Sòng renderings of the canonical Pavāraṇā discourse.
