About the work

A single-fascicle Eastern Hàn 後漢 translation of a discourse using the metaphor of three kinds of horse to illustrate three kinds of disciple. Sub-titled “出雜阿含別譯” (“excerpted from the variant Saṃyukta-āgama”). The Chinese parallels are T99[920] and T100[146].

Prefaces

The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the canonical translator’s signature at the head: 「後漢沙門支曜譯」.

Abstract

T114 was produced during Zhī Yào’s Hàn period (185–220 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
