About the work
A single-fascicle Eastern Jìn 東晉 translation of a short verse-discourse on the famous simile that, while the fragrance of flowers travels only with the wind, the fragrance of moral virtue (sīla) travels in all directions. The Chinese parallels are T99[1073], T100[12], T117 (Fǎxián), and Ekottara-āgama 23.5 (T125). The Pāli parallel is in the Dhammapada (Dhp 54–55).
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Eastern-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「東晉天竺三藏竺曇無蘭譯」.
Abstract
T116 was produced during Zhú Tánwúlán’s Yangdu translation period (381–395 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
