Xūmótínǚ jīng 須摩提女經

Sūtra of Sumati the Daughter (of Anāthapiṇḍika) (the Sumati-sūtra; parallel to Ekottara-āgama 30.3, and to T130 / T131) by 支謙 (Zhī Qiān, 譯)

About the work

A single-fascicle Three-Kingdoms Wú translation of a discourse on the conversion of a Jaina household by Sumati 須摩提, the daughter of Anāthapiṇḍika 阿那邠邸, who has married into a Jain family in a different country and uses her devotion to the Buddha to convert her in-laws. The Chinese parallel is T125[30.3]; T128 has two consecutive Taishō entries (a, b) — sister-versions by Zhī Qiān, see T128b.

Prefaces

The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Wú-period translator’s signature at the head: 「吳月氏優婆塞支謙譯」.

Abstract

T129 was produced during Zhī Qiān’s Wú-court translation period (222–253 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
