Xūmótínǚ jīng 須摩提女經 (T128b)

Sūtra of Sumati (the Sumati-sūtra; alternative recension; parallel to Ekottara-āgama 30.3, and to T128a / T131) by 支謙 (Zhī Qiān, 譯)

About the work

T128b is an alternative recension of the Sumati-sūtra, attributed (like T128a, T129) to Zhī Qiān. The Taishō prints both as T128a and T128b — a rare instance in the canon of two parallel recensions of the same work being given consecutive Taishō entries. The two differ in narrative detail but share the basic Sumati legend.

Prefaces

The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Wú-period translator’s signature at the head: 「吳月支優婆塞支謙譯」.

Abstract

T130 was produced during Zhī Qiān’s Wú-court translation period (222–253 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The doublet relationship to T129 is one of the more curious cases in the early canon: both versions are transmitted under Zhī Qiān’s name, suggesting either two genuinely separate translations from the same Vorlage by the same translator, or — more probably — a textual divergence in the manuscript transmission of a single original work.
