Fēnbié gōngdé lùn 分別功德論
Treatise on the Differentiation of Merit (*Puṇya-vibhaṅga) by 失譯 (anonymous translator, 譯)
About the work
A five-fascicle commentary on the opening chapters of the Ekottara-āgama 增一阿含經 (specifically, on the disciples-list of the Pīṇḍapāta-vagga 弟子品 / Etadagra-vagga), expounding the merit (功德) and qualities of each named disciple of the Buddha through narrative and didactic episodes — the elephant-strength simile in the opening, Kāśyapa’s nirodha-samāpatti and his rescue of Indra from death, and so on. The Indic original is unidentified; the Chinese translation is anonymous and conventionally listed in the Hàn-録 (the Eastern Hàn translation register), as recorded in the canonical signature 「失譯人名附後漢錄」.
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface in the source file. The only paratext is the canonical attribution: 「失譯人名附後漢錄」 (“translator’s name lost; appended to the Hàn register”).
Abstract
T1507 is one of the most-studied of the Āgama-commentary texts in early Chinese Buddhist literature. Its conventional attribution to the Hàn translation registers — i.e., a translation made in the Eastern Hàn 後漢 (25–220 CE) by an unidentified translator — has been challenged on linguistic and content grounds: the modern critical literature (Mizuno; Kuan; Palumbo) places it more plausibly somewhat later, in the late third or early-fourth century CE, with content that presupposes an Ekottara-āgama recension closely related to but distinct from the surviving T125 Zēngyī āhán jīng attributed to Saṃghadeva. The work is fragmentary — only part of the original commentary has come down — and several scholars (Antonello Palumbo) have argued that it is a partial translation of an Ekottara exegetical tradition originally connected to a now-lost Mahāsāṃghika or Bahuśrutīya recension.
The text is doctrinally important for two reasons: first, it preserves narrative material (the aggata = “foremost-disciple” episodes) absent from extant Indic sources, in some cases including Mahāyāna-leaning content; second, it is one of the earliest Chinese sources to articulate the doctrine that an arhat who has entered nirodha-samāpatti (滅盡定) generates merit-fields capable of saving beings from imminent death — illustrated in the famous Kāśyapa–Indra rescue narrative in fascicle one.
The work is conventionally cataloged in the Bibliographic Record of Anonymous Texts in the Chū sānzàng jì jí 出三藏記集 (T2145, juan 4) without translator attribution; later catalogs (Fèi Chángfáng 費長房, Lìdài sānbǎo jì 歷代三寶紀, 597) speculatively attributed it to the Hàn period, but this attribution is now generally regarded as a catalog reconstruction rather than a documented translation history.

Other points of interest
The text’s relationship to the Ekottara-āgama problem — the long-standing question of who in fact translated the surviving Chinese Zēngyī āhán jīng (T125), traditionally Saṃghadeva but now widely doubted — is one of the central scholarly puzzles of early Chinese Buddhist textual history; T1507 is a key piece of evidence in that debate, since it commentates on a recension that is sometimes closer to and sometimes divergent from T125.
