Dàzhìdù lùn shū 大智度論疏
Commentary on the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra by 慧影 (Huìyǐng, 抄)
About the work
A seven-fascicle commentary on Kumārajīva’s [[KR6c0005|Dàzhìdù lùn (T1509)]], compiled by Huìyǐng 慧影 in late Northern-and-Southern Dynasties / early Suí time. The opening contents-list shows that the surviving text is partial: fascicles 1, 6, 9, 10, 13, and 14 (plus a final fragment) survive; fascicles 2–5, 7–8, 11–12 are lost. The extant juan cover the Xùpǐn (Mahāprajñāpāramitā introduction), the thirty-seven bodhipakṣya-dharmas, the three samādhis, the four apramāṇas, and selected later sections.
Prefaces
No author-preface survives (lost with fascicles 2–5); only the contents-list of the seven extant fascicles.
Abstract
T1509 is the most extensive Mahāyāna śāstra in the Chinese canon; X791 is the principal pre-Tang commentary on it. The work is chāo-form (excerpted-and-compiled commentary) drawing on earlier Sānlùn 三論 / Mādhyamika exegetical material; the commentary’s doctrinal orientation is broadly compatible with the Six-Dynasties Sānlùn tradition descending through 僧肇 Sēngzhào, 僧叡 Sēngruì, and 僧詮 Sēngquán. The fragmentary state of transmission has limited the work’s modern scholarly attention, but X791 remains the principal pre-Tang commentary on T1509 and a crucial witness for Six-Dynasties Mādhyamika exegesis.
