Sēngruì 僧叡 (traditionally 352–436), Cháng’ān 長安 monk and one of the four principal disciples of Kumārajīva (alongside Sēngzhào 僧肇, Dàoshēng 道生, and Dàoróng 道融). According to the Gāosēng zhuàn 高僧傳 (T2059, juan 6), he was native of Wèijùn 魏郡 (modern Héběi), studied first under Dàoān, and was a leading exegete in Kumārajīva’s Chánɡ’ān translation school of the 400s, contributing prefaces to the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa, Saddharmapuṇḍarīka, and Mahāprajñāpāramitā-upadeśa (Dà zhì dù lùn).
In the present-text context he appears earlier in his career, as one of the scribes (bǐshòu 筆受) named in Dàoān’s preface to KR6a0157 Sìāhánmù chāo jiě (T1505), composed at the Yèsì 鄴寺 in 382 CE.
