About the work

A one-juan early-Qīng (Kāngxī-era) critical-commentary edition of the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra by the layman Zhòng Zhīpíng ( Shìshí 士石) of Chángshuǐ 長水 (Jiāxīng region). The catalog credit-line huìzuǎn 彙纂 (“compiled”) and the title’s zhèng’é 正訛 (“rectifying errors”) together identify the genre: a critical-edition compendium that gathers existing commentaries and deletes what the editor deems erroneous. Per the preface, Zhòng was a Confucian-trained scholar who turned to Buddhist study late in life; his stated method is huìzuǎn zhū zhù, shān fán jiǎn yào, jiě yì zhèng’é 彚纂諸註,刪繁簡要,解義正譌 (“compendize the commentaries, prune the diffuse to keep the essential, explain the meanings and rectify the errors”). Preserved as X25 no. 489. The text bears no internal date; notBefore / notAfter set conservatively to the Kāngxī era (1662–1722). Catalog dynasty 清.

Abstract

The preface (No. 489-A), unsigned in the visible portion, places the work in the early-Qīng Jiāxīng lay-Buddhist scholarly circle: Zhòng’s contemporary friend 王際時 Wáng Jìshí helped sponsor the work; Zhòng himself is described as having yòu gōng Zōu-Lǔ zhòngshèng diǎn fén, wǎn xùn Zhúqián zhū jīng àozhǐ 幼攻鄒魯眾聖典墳,晚訊竺乾諸經奧旨 (“in youth studied the canonical texts of Zōu and Lǔ [Confucian classics], in old age inquired into the deep meanings of the Indian sūtras”). The metaphor for the result is double: xián jīnjìng yú dāngtái, yán chī xī lù; rú nà zhòng liú yú jùhǎi, yángyì qīngchéng 似懸金鏡於當臺,妍媸悉露;如納眾流於巨海,洋溢清澄 (“like hanging a golden mirror on the dais, where beauty and ugliness are alike disclosed; like gathering the many streams into the great sea, where they overflow in clear transparency”). The body of the work follows the standard Vajracchedikā sequence (Liáng Zhāomíng 32-section division) with annotated prose under each passage, with the zhèng’é operations (corrections, alternative readings, suspect interpolations) marked editorially. The work is one of the more interesting early-Qīng lay critical-edition Vajracchedikā commentaries.

Other points of interest

The zhèng’é genre — correcting errors — is itself a characteristic Kāngxī-era literary mode, paralleling the contemporary kǎozhèng 考證 turn in classical scholarship. That a layman would apply this mode to a Mahāyāna sūtra is symptomatic of the early-Qīng erosion of the strict monastic / lay boundary in scholarly Buddhist publication.
