Jīngāng jīng shū 金剛經疏 (T85 no. 2737)
Diamond Sūtra Commentary [anonymous]
About the work
An anonymous one-juan Vajracchedikā commentary recovered from the Dūnhuáng cache and preserved as T85 no. 2737. Authorship is not preserved either in the manuscript itself or in catalog tradition; the catalog meta accordingly lists no persons field. The text breaks off mid-passage at the surviving fragment’s boundaries, suggesting it is a partial witness of a longer original work. notBefore / notAfter set very broadly (600–900) since neither author nor date is established; Sui-Táng provenance is generally assumed for Dūnhuáng Vajracchedikā commentary manuscripts. Catalog dynasty 唐.
Abstract
The surviving fragment opens in the middle of the commentary on the second-fruit (Skt. sakṛdāgāmin) passage of the sūtra: Sùpútí, yú yì yún hé, sītuóhán néng zuò shì niàn, wǒ dé sītuóhán guǒ bù? (Section 9 of the Liáng Zhāomíng division). The commentator parses the sūtra as a sequence of Sùpútí’s questions and the Buddha’s responses, with each fruit (xūtuóhuán, sītuóhán, ānuóhán, āluóhàn) treated separately. The annotation is structural-doctrinal in the standard mid-Táng manner, using the Sìfēn lǜ schema for the four fruits and indexing each to the corresponding fánnǎo (afflictions) cut by it (sītuóhán = bó tānchēn 薄貪嗔, the diminishing of greed-anger, etc.). The work is one of three undated and anonymous Dūnhuáng Jīngāng jīng shū in T85 (cf. KR6c0110 T85 no. 2738; KR6c0111 T85 no. 2739, the latter an interlinear annotation edition).
