Diamond Sūtra Commentary [anonymous]
About the work
A second anonymous one-juan Vajracchedikā commentary recovered from the Dūnhuáng cache and preserved as T85 no. 2738. Distinct from but companion to KR6c0109 (T85 no. 2737) and KR6c0111 (T85 no. 2739). Authorship not preserved. The surviving fragment treats the kṣānti-pāramitā (forbearance-perfection) section of the sūtra. notBefore / notAfter set very broadly (600–900) consistent with the Dūnhuáng-corpus dating range. Catalog dynasty 唐.
Abstract
The surviving fragment opens on the rěnrǔ pōluómì 忍辱波羅蜜 (forbearance perfection) section of the sūtra. The commentator deploys a striking gendered-political typology of forces: gù nǚrén yǐ chēn wéi lì, yù yǒu suǒ suǒ bì xiān chēn gù; guówáng yǐ jiāoháo wéi lì; luóhàn yǐ jīngjìn wéi lì; zhūfó yǐ dàbēi wéi lì; bǐqiū yǐ rěn wéi lì 故女人以嗔為力,欲有所索必先嗔故;國王以嬌豪為力;羅漢以精進為力;諸佛以大悲為力;比丘以忍為力 (“women take anger as their force, since seeking something they must first anger; kings take haughtiness as their force; arhats take diligence as their force; buddhas take great compassion as their force; bhikṣus take forbearance as their force”). The commentator then cites the Yíjiàojīng 遺教經, the Qīfó jì 七佛偈, and other authoritative sources on kṣānti, before specifying that the Vajracchedikā’s rěn is to be understood as non-arising-dharmas-forbearance (wúshēng fǎrěn 無生法忍 — the anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti characteristic of non-retrogressing bodhisattvas). The work belongs to the same Dūnhuáng anonymous-commentary cluster as KR6c0109 and KR6c0111.
