Fǎhuá jīng zhuójiě 法華經卓解

Distinguished Interpretation of the Lotus Sūtra by 徐昌治 (Xú Chāngzhì / Jìnzhōu / Wúyī dàorén, 著)

About the work

A seven-juan late-Míng / early-Qīng Lotus Sūtra commentary by the lay Buddhist scholar 徐昌治 Xú Chāngzhì (sobriquet Wúyī dàorén 無依道人, “Master Without-Refuge”). The work is preserved as X32n0617 in the Xùzàngjīng and represents the early-Qīng continuation of the late-Wànlì literati-Buddhist commentarial tradition.

Prefaces

The text in the X32n0617 recension carries Xú Chāngzhì’s own framing of the zhuójiě 卓解 (“distinguished interpretation”) genre, which indicates a distinctive personal-individual reading rather than a school-derivative exposition.

Abstract

Xú Chāngzhì’s Zhuójiě belongs to the early-Qīng continuation of the late-Wànlì literati-Buddhist commentarial tradition, parallel to 焦竑 Jiāo Hóng’s Pínglín (KR6d0078) and the broader late-Míng tradition of distinctive personal commentaries on the Lotus Sūtra. The work’s seven-juan extent and continuous-running structure place it among the more substantial late-imperial Lotus commentaries.

The dating is bracketed within the early-Qīng productive period c. 1644–1700.
