Suízìyì sānmèi 隨自意三昧

The Self-Following Samādhi by 慧思 (Huìsī / Nányuè Huìsī, 撰)

About the work

A single-juan Chén-period meditation manual by Huìsī 慧思 (515–577), the second Tiāntái patriarch, on the suízìyì sānmèi 隨自意三昧 (“self-following samādhi”) — a meditative practice that Huìsī articulated alongside the Fǎhuá sānmèi and the Wúzhèng sānmèi.

Abstract

The Suízìyì sānmèi belongs together with Huìsī’s other major surviving works (KR6d0151, KR6d0152, KR6d0156) as the documentary record of his pre-Zhìyǐ Sinitic Mahāyāna meditative-doctrinal synthesis. The composition is bracketed within Huìsī’s productive period at Nányuè 南嶽 c. 560–577.
