Xué Tiāntáizōng fǎmén dàyì 學天台宗法門大意

The Great Purport of the Dharma-Gates for Studying the Tiāntái School by 行滿 (Xíngmǎn / Tiāntái Xíngmǎn, 述)

About the work

A short single-juan late-Táng synoptic introduction to the Tiāntái school’s doctrinal-meditative apparatus by Xíngmǎn 行滿 (d. 824) — Zhànrán’s principal direct disciple and one of the principal Chinese teachers of 最澄 Saichō (the Japanese Tendai founder).

Abstract

The Xué Tiāntáizōng fǎmén dàyì belongs together with Xíngmǎn’s Liùjí yì (KR6d0219) as the principal late-Táng pedagogical productions for transmitting Tiāntái doctrine to international students — particularly Saichō and the early Japanese Tendai movement. The composition is bracketed within Xíngmǎn’s productive period c. 800–824.
