Liùjí yì 六即義

The Meaning of the Six Identities by 行滿 (Xíngmǎn / Tiāntái Xíngmǎn, 述)

About the work

A short single-juan late-Táng exposition of the Tiāntái doctrine of liùjí 六即 (“six identities”) by Xíngmǎn 行滿 (d. 824). The liùjí doctrine — articulating six successive levels of identity between practitioner and Buddha (理即 lǐjí / 名字即 míngzìjí / 觀行即 guānxíngjí / 相似即 xiāngsìjí / 分證即 fēnzhèngjí / 究竟即 jiūjìngjí) — is one of the central Tiāntái doctrinal-meditative classifications.

Abstract

The Liùjí yì belongs together with Xíngmǎn’s Xué Tiāntáizōng fǎmén dàyì (KR6d0218) as the principal late-Táng pedagogical-doctrinal productions of Zhànrán’s immediate disciple. The composition is bracketed within Xíngmǎn’s productive period c. 800–824.
