Cultivation-and-Verification Ritual of the Bodhi-Maṇḍa of the Sūtra of Perfect Awakening by 宗密 Zōngmì (述)

About the work

This 18-fascicle text by 宗密 Zōngmì is the great Buddhist liturgical-ritual manual for the Yuánjué jīng 圓覺經 ([[KR6i0551|Sūtra of Perfect Awakening]], T0842) — the Mahāyāna scripture that, alongside the Avataṃsaka, was central to Zōngmì’s Chán-Huáyán synthesis. The 18-fascicle scope makes the work one of the most extensive Buddhist ritual manuals of the Tang period, and the principal liturgical-ritual manual of the Yuánjué jīng tradition.

Abstract

The work is conventionally datable to 宗密 Zōngmì’s mature period at the Cǎotángsì on Mt. Guīfēng, c. 820 – 841 CE. The bracket adopted here reflects this window. The 18-fascicle scope reflects the elaborate liturgical-cosmological architecture of the ritual, which Zōngmì developed alongside his major doctrinal work on the Yuánjué jīng (the [[KR6i0555|Yuánjué jīng dà shū 圓覺經大疏]]).

The work is preserved in the Manji Xù zàng jīng (X1475) collection.
