Niè pán jīng shū sān dé zhǐ guī 涅槃經疏三德指歸
The Three-Virtue Direction-Pointing of the Commentary on the Nirvāṇa Sūtra by 智圓 (Zhìyuán, 述)
About the work
This 19-fascicle Northern-Sòng sub-commentary on 灌頂 Guàndǐng’s Dà bān niè pán jīng shū 大般涅槃經疏 (KR6g0007) is by 智圓 Zhìyuán, the Shānwài Tiāntái-school master. The “three virtues” (sān dé 三德) of the title refers to the Nièpán jīng’s threefold doctrine of fǎ shēn / bān ruò / jiě tuō (Dharma-body, wisdom, liberation).
Abstract
The bracket adopted here (990–1022) reflects Zhìyuán’s mature scholarly activity. The 19-fascicle scope makes this one of the largest Sòng-period sub-commentaries.
