Dìzàng běnyuàn jīng kēwén 地藏本願經科文
Topical Outline of the Sūtra of the Original Vows of Kṣitigarbha by 靈椉 (Língshèng / “Blue Lotus Master”, 定 / structural definition) and his disciple 岳玄 (Yuèxuán, 排 / arrangement of the printed text)
About the work
The Dìzàng běnyuàn jīng kēwén in 1 fascicle is the structural / topical outline (科文 kēwén) of [[KR6h0016|the Dìzàng púsà běnyuàn jīng]] composed by the early-Qing scholar-monk 靈椉 Língshèng (the Qīnglián “Blue Lotus Master”) and arranged for printing by his disciple 岳玄 Yuèxuán. It functions as a structural skeleton — chapter, section, and sub-section divisions in tabular form — to be used in conjunction with the running commentary [[KR6h0019|Kēzhù]] and the introductory synthesis [[KR6h0018|Lúnguàn]], the three works together constituting Língshèng’s complete commentarial apparatus on the Dìzàng běnyuàn.
Prefaces
The Xuzangjing print of the Kēwén opens directly with the table of contents and the structural diagram. The fuller preface is found at the head of [[KR6h0018|the Lúnguàn]] (X21n0383), which Língshèng intended as the front-matter of the combined apparatus.
Abstract
The kēwén genre is one of the most distinctive Chinese-Buddhist scholastic forms: a hierarchical analytic outline of a sūtra or treatise, dividing the work into nested numerical sections (e.g., “the great section on x, of which the first sub-section…”) for use as a study and commentarial scaffold. It originated in the Suí-Táng exegetical tradition (cf. the kēwén of [[KR6e0001|the Avataṃsaka]] in 澄觀 Chéngguān’s commentaries) and remained a standard format for Buddhist scholarly editions through the Qīng. Língshèng’s Kēwén applies this format to the Dìzàng běnyuàn jīng, dividing the 13 chapters of the sūtra into a fine-grained structural hierarchy that supports his running commentary in [[KR6h0019|the Kēzhù]]. The dating window 1644–1722 corresponds broadly to the Shùnzhì 順治 through Kāngxī 康熙 reigns, the period during which Língshèng was active. The Kēwén and its companions form the principal Qīng-period commentarial apparatus on the Dìzàng běnyuàn jīng.
