About the work
X360 is 從義’s seven-fascicle Northern-Sòng subcommentary on Zhìyǐ’s [[KR6i0306|Wénjù 文句]] (T1785), the wénjù counterpart to his [[KR6i0314|Shùnzhèng jì 順正記]] (X359). The title’s xīnjì 新記 (“new notes”) is a programmatic statement of the work’s ambition: a new annotation alongside 知禮’s established [[KR6i0307|Wénjù jì 文句記]] (T1786), with 從義’s own emendations at points of disagreement.
Abstract
The work is more philologically detailed than X359 (the xuányì counterpart), as the wénjù genre demands. Date bracket again follows 從義’s mature productive period (1070–1091). Together with X359, X360 is one of the two principal post-知禮 Sòng subcommentaries on the Suvarṇaprabhāsa commentarial doublet, and like X359 it is intra-shānjiā polemic that broadly accepts 知禮’s framework while challenging him on specific philological and sectional readings.
從義’s positions did not displace 知禮’s as the school’s standard reading of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa; the Sòng-Yuán-Míng Tiāntái mainstream continued to prefer 知禮. But X359 / X360 form a coherent rival corpus that was kept in print and in scholarly circulation, and is the principal evidence for the survival of internal critical discussion within the shānjiā lineage in the post-知禮 generation.
