Northern-Sòng Tiāntái 天台 master of the shānjiā 山家 lineage; zì Shūduān 叔端, sobriquet Shénzhì 神智. DILA Authority A000571. Native of Píngyáng 平陽 (modern Zhèjiāng). Born 1042 (Qìngí 慶曆 2); died Yuányòu 元祐 6, 1st month, 21st day (= 18 February 1091), aged 50.
Active in the second-generation post-Zhīlǐ Tiāntái revival, building on the doctrinal apparatus established by Sìmíng Zhīlǐ (960–1028) and his immediate successors. Cóngyì was particularly prolific as a commentator on the Tiāntái scholastic tradition.
Major work: the Fǎhuá jīng sān-dà-bù bǔ-zhù 法華經三大部補注 (KR6d0063, X28n0586, 14 juan) — supplementary annotations on the Tiāntái triple-treatise corpus, complementing the comprehensive study guide of Fǎ-zhào’s Dú-jiào jì (KR6d0062). His other works include the Jīn-guāng-míng wén-jù xīn-jì 金光明文句新記 (subcommentary on Zhìyǐ’s Suvarṇaprabhāsa commentary) and various other Tiāntái commentaries.
