Léngqié jīng cāndìng shū 楞伽經參訂疏

Comparative-Collation Commentary on the Sūtra of Laṅkā collated and annotated by 廣莫 (Guǎngmò, 參訂)

About the work

X332 in eight fascicles is 廣莫’s late-Míng comparative-collation (cāndìng 參訂) commentary on [[KR6i0327|Léngqiéābáduōluó bǎo jīng 楞伽阿跋多羅寶經]] (T670). The genre is cāndìng — collating earlier annotations and emending the textual corruption — combined with shū — a doctrinal commentary. The work is one of the late-Míng monastic productions on the Laṅkāvatāra, contemporary with X326 / X328 / X329 / X330 / X331.

Prefaces

The Taishō / Xuzangjing witness preserves at the head a preface (Léngqié jīng cāndìng shū xù 楞伽經參訂疏序) by an unnamed contemporary, identifying the editor as “the bhikṣu of West-Wú [西吳] Shì Guǎngmò 釋廣莫”; the preface frames the cāndìng project explicitly as an effort to “raise up the dark and correct the erroneous, with the aim of supporting the sūtra and rectifying mind-learning” (標玄訂謬,將以翼經而正心學). The reference to xīnxué 心學 (“mind-learning”) is doubly apt: it is the late-Míng Wáng Yáng-míng-school philosophical idiom and the Chán-school self-designation of its lineage as the “school of the seal of mind” (心印宗門). The preface continues to draw a parallel with the Confucian xīn tradition, citing Yáo and Shùn’s “the human-mind is precarious, the dao-mind is subtle” — a striking inter-textual move characteristic of late-Míng three-teachings discourse.

Abstract

廣莫 (DILA Authority A001663) is otherwise primarily known as a Vinaya specialist — author of the Sìfēn jièběn yuánqǐ shìyì (KR6k0148). The Léngqié cāndìng shū is therefore one of the few non-Vinaya works in the 廣莫 corpus, and gives a different cross-section of his productive activity. Date bracket conservatively follows the late-Míng span (1580–1644); doctrinal vocabulary is consistent with a Wànlì–Chóngzhēn date.
