Yuánjué jīng lüèshū xùzhù 圓覺經略疏序注

Annotations on the Preface to the Abridged Commentary on the Sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment by 如山 (Rúshān, 注)

About the work

A single-fascicle annotated commentary on the preface — by 裴休 Péi Xiū 裴休 (787–860) — to 宗密 Guīfēng Zōngmì’s KR6i0553 Yuánjué jīng lüèshū. Composed by the Sòng-era monk 如山 Rúshān 如山 of the Zhāngjiāng Chán Yuàn 章江禪院 at Lóngshā 龍沙 (modern Nánchāng, Jiāngxī), it is the companion piece to KR6i0566 Yuánjué jīng xùzhù (which treats Péi’s preface to the sūtra itself) and shares its line-by-line annotative method.

Abstract

Where the sister work treats the more general preface to the sūtra, the present xùzhù takes Péi Xiū’s narrower technical preface to Zōngmì’s Lüèshū. Péi’s Lüèshū preface contains substantial autobiographical material — including his account of his discipleship under Zōngmì, his receipt of Zōngmì’s writings, and the famous formulation 教也者,諸佛菩薩所留之言;禪也者,諸佛菩薩所傳之心 (“‘Teaching’ is the words bequeathed by the Buddhas and bodhisattvas; ‘Chán’ is the mind transmitted by the Buddhas and bodhisattvas”) — and Rúshān’s annotations are correspondingly oriented to biographical, lineage, and doctrinal-historical clarification. The work supplies extensive material on Zōngmì’s biography and on the relationship between the Lüèshū and the larger Dàshū corpus.

Rúshān’s lifedates and biographical details are not preserved; the catalog and the work itself simply identify him as Lóngshā Zhāngjiāng Chányuàn shāmén 龍沙章江禪院沙門. As with the xùzhù, the composition window is bracketed at 1100–1279 on the basis of internal evidence.

Other points of interest

The two xùzhù texts together preserve a substantial Sòng-era reading of Péi Xiū’s biography and lineage, including the sānshēng 三生 (“three lives”) narrative connecting Péi to the Eastern-Jìn lay-Buddhist 許玄度 Xǔ Xuándù — material that is otherwise scattered through Sòng gāosēng zhuàn but here gathered into a compact commentarial format.
