Explication of the Lotus-Womb-Realm Ritual Manual (Jp. Renge taizōkai giki kaishaku) by 眞興 (Shinkō, 撰)

About the work

A doctrinal exegetical commentary by the Heian Hossō scholar Shinkō 眞興 (眞興, 935–1004) on the principal Garbhadhātu ritual manual (KR6j0008, T18n0852a) — Fǎquán’s Xuánfǎsì yíguǐ. The commentary is one of the earliest substantial Heian doctrinal treatments of the Garbhadhātu ritual system from outside the strict Shingon (Tōmitsu) lineage.

Abstract

Shinkō’s Jiěshì (Jp. Kaishaku — “Explication”) is a remarkable Heian-era cross-school engagement: a Hossō-trained Kōfuku-ji scholar producing a systematic doctrinal commentary on a Tang Esoteric ritual manual. The composition reflects the late-10th-century Heian intellectual environment in which Hossō (Yogācāra) doctrinal categories were being applied to the interpretation of Esoteric ritual texts — a methodology that would become characteristic of the Heian “doctrinal-Esoteric” (kyō-mitsu 教密) synthesis.

The commentary covers the principal sections of Fǎquán’s ritual manual — the preparatory rites, the central Garbhadhātu sādhana, the abhiṣeka offerings, the japa sequences — and analyses each in terms of its doctrinal presuppositions about the bodhicitta, the dharmakāya, and the Yogācāra “consciousness-only” framework. Where Fǎquán’s text is purely operative-ritual, Shinkō’s jiěshì is doctrinal-interpretive; together they exemplify the Heian distinction between ji (practice) and kyō (doctrine) as the two complementary registers of Esoteric understanding.

The dating bracket (ca. 960 to Shinkō’s death in 1004) reflects his documented mature period at Kōfuku-ji.
