A two-fascicle Garbhadhātu ritual codification compiled by Fǎquán 法全 (法全, fl. ca. 824–859) at the Xuánfǎsì 玄法寺 in late-Tang Chángān; commonly cited under the abbreviated title Xuánfǎsì yíguǐ 玄法寺儀軌 (“Xuánfǎsì Ritual Manual”). The text is the second-generation systematisation of the Garbhadhātu sādhana, drawing on the foundational Tang ritual manuals of Śubhakarasiṃha (T850, T851) and reflecting the Huìguǒ → Yìcāo → Fǎquán transmission lineage at the Qīnglóngsì / Xuánfǎsì Chángān Esoteric establishments.
Prefaces
The Taishō text is presented as a ritual manual without separate preface; the editorial header gives “唐青龍寺翻經沙門法全集” — “compiled by the śramaṇa Fǎquán, scripture-translator of the Chángān Qīnglóngsì.” Additional editions consulted are noted in the variant readings (Sòng, Yuán, Míng witnesses are cited as collateral).
Abstract
The Xuánfǎsì yíguǐ is the principal late-Tang codification of the Garbhadhātu mandala ritual, distinct from the Śubhakarasiṃha-era ritual manuals (T850, T851) that preceded it by a century. Fǎquán’s compilation reflects the standardised liturgical practice that had developed at the Chángān Esoteric monasteries (Qīnglóngsì and Xuánfǎsì) over the preceding generations. Its two fascicles cover: (i) the preparatory rites — site consecration, sīma construction, the Three Mysteries introductory yoga, the bodhicitta invocation; (ii) the central sādhana — the visualisation-construction of the Garbhadhātu mandala with its central Mahāvairocana surrounded by the four directional Buddhas, the eight Bodhisattvas, the vidyārājas and the protective deities; (iii) the abhiṣeka offerings, the japa of the mūla-mantra and ancillary mantras, and the merit-dedication.
The codification is the version transmitted to Japan by Ennin 圓仁 (842) and Enchin 圓珍 (858) and became the standard Garbhadhātu ritual basis of the Japanese Tendai-Esoteric (Taimitsu) lineage. Its alternative title Xuánfǎsì yíguǐ — referring to Fǎquán’s home monastery — is used in the Japanese-Esoteric literature to distinguish it from the Śubhakarasiṃha ritual manuals (which the Tōmitsu / Shingon lineage of Kūkai had imported) and from later codifications.
The dating bracket 824–859 reflects Fǎquán’s documented active period; precise composition date is unknown.
