About the work
A one-fascicle Esoteric dhāraṇī scripture translated by Xuánzàng (玄奘, 600/602–664), the great Tang Buddhist pilgrim and translator. Its preservation in the Esoteric volume 19 of the Taishō reflects the proto-tantric dhāraṇī-class character of the text — Xuánzàng’s principal translation work was Yogācāra and Prajñāpāramitā doctrinal scriptures, but he also translated several dhāraṇī scriptures.
Abstract
The Zhū fó xīn tuóluóní jīng presents a dhāraṇī-recitation practice oriented to the Buddhas of the ten directions, accessing their cosmic compassion through the xīn (“heart” / hṛdaya) dhāraṇī. The text is one of the earliest Tang Chinese translations of a Buddhist dhāraṇī scripture in this style, predating the systematic Esoteric translations of the 8th century by some 70–100 years.
The translation dates from Xuánzàng’s documented translation period at Chángān (645–664).
