Jílè yuànwén 極樂願文

Aspiration Prayer for [Rebirth in] the Land of Bliss (Sukhāvatī) by 薩穆丹達爾吉 Sàmùdān Dáěrjí (Samten Targye, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Qīng-period Tibetan-Esoteric praṇidhāna (aspiration-prayer) translated by Samten Targye (薩穆丹達爾吉). The text is a Tibetan-language bde smon / aspiration text for rebirth in Sukhāvatī (極樂 Jílè — “Bliss-Supreme”), translated into Chinese for use in the Qīng-court Tibetan-Buddhist devotional context.

Abstract

The Jílè yuànwén genre — short verse-or-prose aspirations for rebirth in Sukhāvatī — is one of the most widely-used devotional forms in Tibetan Buddhism. Samten Targye’s Chinese translation makes one such Tibetan praṇidhāna available to Chinese Buddhist practitioners in the Qīng-court Tibetan-Buddhist environment. The translation dates from the Qiánlóng to early Jiāqìng period (1736–1820).
