About the work
A one-fascicle parallel translation of the Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya-dhāraṇī-sūtra by the Táng lay translator Dù Xíngyǐ (杜行顗) at Cháng’ān in 679 CE (Yífèng 4 / 1st month) — preceding Buddhapāli’s translation (KR6j0144) by four years. The translation was a collaborative work involving the Indian bhikṣu Dùpó (度婆) and the Tripiṭaka-master Divākara (地婆訶羅) as Sanskrit-verifier.
Abstract
The Dù Xíngyǐ recension is the earliest of the four Táng Chinese translations of the Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya-dhāraṇī-sūtra. According to the Kāiyuán shìjiào lù (KR6s0093), the work was undertaken by imperial decree of Emperor Gāozōng after Buddhapāli had presented the Sanskrit manuscript at the imperial court. The Dù Xíngyǐ recension and the later Buddhapāli recension (T967) are the two principal early Táng witnesses; the later Divākara translations (T969 = KR6j0146, T970 = KR6j0147) and Yìjìng’s translation (T971 = KR6j0148) round out the Táng witnesses.
The translation date is Yífèng 4 = 679 CE.
