Fóshuō Ānántuómùqūníhēlítuólínní jīng 佛說阿難陀目佉尼呵離陀隣尼經
Anantamukha-nirhāra-dhāraṇī Sūtra by 佛馱扇多 (Buddhaśānta, 譯)
About the work
A one-fascicle Northern-Wèi translation by Buddhaśānta (佛馱扇多 = 佛陀扇多, fl. ca. 525–539) of the Anantamukha-sādhaka-dhāraṇī. The Chinese title preserves a particularly full transliteration of the Sanskrit, including the final -dhāraṇī element rendered as 隣尼 — i.e. Ananta-mukha-nirhāra-dhāraṇī → 阿難陀目佉-尼呵離陀-隣尼-經. This is the most linguistically transparent of the eight versions for the title formula. CANWWW alt-title: Ānántuóhēlítuólínní jīng 阿難陀呵離陀鄰尼經.
Abstract
Buddhaśānta worked at Luòyáng during the late Northern-Wèi period (孝昌–永安, ca. 525–539) and was a colleague of Bodhiruci I 菩提流支; together they participated in the major Yogācāra translation programme at Báimǎsì 白馬寺. The present Anantamukha translation is one of his shorter works, made within the larger ferment of late-Northern-Wèi Buddhist translation. Its preservation alongside Buddhaśānta’s Mahāyāna-saṃgraha (KR6n0001 T1592, the principal Yogācāra treatise of Asaṅga) suggests that the dhāraṇī was incorporated into the Yogācāra-affiliated bodhicitta-curriculum that Buddhaśānta and his colleagues were developing.
