Recitation Method of the Cintāmaṇi-Cakra Dhāraṇī of Avalokiteśvara by 寶思惟 (Bǎosīwéi, Ratnacinta, 譯)

About the work

A short one-fascicle ritual niànsòng fǎ 念誦法 — a recitation manual — for the Cintāmaṇi-cakra-dhāraṇī, translated by Bǎosīwéi (寶思惟). The text is the practical companion to Bǎosīwéi’s parent dhāraṇī-sūtra (KR6j0290 = T20n1083), giving the mūla-mantra and the recitation procedure stripped of the narrative frame.

Abstract

The work opens with the gēnběn zhòu 根本呪 — the mūla-dhāraṇī — given in transliteration. The body of the text then walks through the practitioner’s procedure: visualisation of the deity holding the cintāmaṇi and the cakra, recitation count, the supplementary mudrā-spells, and the dedication. As an extract-companion to KR6j0290, the manual is an example of the mìyán niànsòng (祕密言念誦) ritual genre that proliferated in the late-7th and 8th centuries: the parent dhāraṇī-sūtra carried the mythic and doctrinal frame; the recitation manual carried the practical apparatus. The two texts probably circulated together as a paired set in the late-7th-century translation milieu of 寶思惟 Bǎosīwéi and 菩提流志 Bodhiruci.
