About the work

A one-fascicle Tang Cintāmaṇi-cakra dhāraṇī-sūtra translated by the Kashmīrī master Bǎosīwéi (寶思惟, Skt. Ratnacinta or Maṇicintana, d. 721), one of the principal late-7th-century Tang Esoteric translators. The colophon names him 唐天竺三藏寶思惟. The text is one of the four Tang Cintāmaṇi-cakra recensions; together with KR6j0287, KR6j0288, and KR6j0289 it constitutes the Tang corpus of the Cintāmaṇi-cakra-dhāraṇī.

Abstract

In the opening Avalokiteśvara addresses the Buddha: “I have a great altar of Vidyā-spells, named Lotus-Peak Vajra-Empowerment Secret Unobstructed Avalokiteśvara Lotus-Wish-Fulfilling Mahā-Maṇi-Cakra Heart-Dhāraṇī (蓮花峯金剛加持祕密無礙觀世音蓮華如意摩尼轉輪心陀羅尼)” — that is, the most-developed kalpa-name of the deity-cycle. Bǎosīwéi’s recension is somewhat more elaborately framed than Yìjìng’s (KR6j0288) but less than Bodhiruci’s (KR6j0287); it develops the cintāmaṇi-mahā-maṇi-cakra (如意摩尼轉輪) iconography and the associated visualisation practice. Bǎosīwéi was the principal collaborator of Bodhiruci (cf. Forte 1984), and the close parallelism between his recension and Bodhiruci’s (KR6j0287) reflects their joint workshop.
