Secret Key — Annotated Commentary on the Contemplation Method of the Cintāmaṇi-Cakra Bodhisattva (失譯, translator unknown)

About the work

A short one-fascicle anonymous commentary (義注) and esoteric exposition (祕訣 mìjué, “secret key”) on the contemplation-method (觀門) of the Cintāmaṇi-cakra Avalokiteśvara. The work is a syllable-by-syllable Esoteric commentary on the bīja-mantras of the Cintāmaṇi-cakra cycle, beginning with the syllable Oṃ (唵字) — “the meaning of the all-Dharma current; anupalabdhi taken as upāya.” The translator is unknown (失譯); the genre and the bīja-exegesis style place the work in the late-Tang or early-Sòng Esoteric milieu.

Abstract

The text is structured as a sequential exegesis of the syllables of the Cintāmaṇi-cakra-mantra in the manner of the Tang-period bīja-mantra commentaries (cf. 一行 Yīxíng’s Dàrìjīng shū 大日經疏 (KR6j0662) commentary on the Mahāvairocana mantra-syllables). For each syllable the text gives: (1) the literal Sanskrit grammatical meaning of the bīja; (2) the corresponding Buddhist doctrinal interpretation — typically expressed in terms of anupalabdhi (無所得), vairocana-jñāna, or prajñā-pāramitā concepts; (3) the visualisation associated with the syllable; (4) the resulting siddhi obtained. Such yìzhù mìjué texts circulated in the Tang Esoteric school as practitioner aids for the deeper yoga practice. The work is anonymous; its contents place it in the eighth- or ninth-century Tang Esoteric school, but no firm attribution is possible.
